Change default Message Notification sound on Android 2024

I recently got the new Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. While setting up my new phone, I wanted to set a default notification sound for the Messages app.After doing a lot of searching online, I only found instructions that were outdated and not applicable to the current version of the Message app as of Feb, 2024.I did some digging in the setting and I finally found out how to do it. It is very unintuitive, but here is what I found.

  1. Open the system settings screen.
  2. Click on Notifications.
  3. Click on Advanced Settings
  4. Scroll to the bottom of that page and enable “Manage notification categories for each app
  5. Go back to your home screen and run the Message App
  6. Click on your profile picture and select “Messages Settings
  7. Click on Notifications
  8. Click on “Behaviour, sound & more”
  9. At the bottom of that page, click on “Notification categories”
  10. Make sure Incoming messages is enabled then click on it to change it settings.
  11. Click on the Sound option to select the Notification sound.
  12. Back all the way out to the home screen and you are done.
